May 3, 2009 - Sunday - VESTRY SELECTS NEW RECTOR!
The Vestry of Church of the Redeemer is pleased to announce that with God's grace and guidance
The Reverend Valori Mulvey Sherer
has been selected as the next Rector.
Rev. Sherer is currently the Rector at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Cadillac, MI. She is a graduate of The School of Theology, University of the South at Sewanee and is completing her Doctor of Ministry through Sewanee. She received her Associate of Arts degree from County College of Morris and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University.
Prior to serving as Rector at St. Mary's she was Curate at St. Paul's in St. Joseph, MI. Before entering the seminary she was the Executive Director of The Haven, Shelter for Battered Women in Valdosta, GA (1994-2000); Founding Director of South Alabama Blackbelt Regional Abuse Haven in Selma, AL (1992-1994); and self-employed as a Marketing Consultant (1978-1992).
She enjoys crocheting and has been actively involved in St. Mary's Prayer Shawl ministry and also making Rosaries.
She and her husband, Steve, have three children. Their daughter, Jessica, is a flutist who is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in music in Florida. Their son, David, is in college and pursuing a career in physical therapy. Their youngest son, Patrick, is a Senior in high school and is planning to pursue a career in engineering.
She will start at Redeemer on July 7. Anyone who is interested in assisting with her transition here is encouraged to contact Dennis Stitzel or Leslie Richardson.
We ask for your continued prayers for our parish during this transition period, Rev. Sherer and her family, the parish at St. Mary's, and Father Rowe and his family as he prepares to depart.
Father Rowe's last Sunday at Redeemer will be Pentecost Sunday, May 31.
The Church of the Redeemer Discernment Committee / Search Committee is the key church group leading the way as Redeemer searches for a new rector.
In the fall of 2008 the Discernment Committee, led by Brian Smith, released its Parish Profile of Redeemer to officially begin the rector search process. Click on the Profile link below learn more about Redeemer.

The Discernment Committee is completing the telephone interview phase of the search process. This has allowed us to learn more about each of the candidates and they in turn to learn more about Redeemer. While this is an exciting phase, it is also challenging as we discern whom we feel God is calling us to continue in the process. We will begin making visits to our final candidates as well as interviewing their references. We ask for your continued prayers for our committee, the parish, and all of our candidates to include the one who will be called to be our future rector.
The next phases of our search will involve travel for both committee members as well as candidates and their spouses. In an effort to keep costs to a minimum, we would like to request that if any parishioners have frequent flier miles that they would like to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. You can contact a member of the committee or the church office.
The Discernment Committee has begun the visitation phase of the search process. During these visits we meet with the candidates and their families for formal and informal interviews. We also attend church services in order to observe their preaching / liturgical styles as well as their interactions with their parishioners.
We plan to complete these visits by the middle of March and will then decide whom we will invite to visit Redeemer and meet with the Bishop.
After these visits are completed, we will discern whom we feel called to present to the Vestry as our candidate for Rector.
This is a very challenging time in the process and we are praying for the candidates and their families, the Vestry, our Parish, Father Rowe and his family, and for continued guidance of our committee.
We ask that you continue to keep all of these in your prayers as well.
The Discernment Committee is coming in to the homestretch of our discernment process! We have visited our final candidates and are now having those we feel called to continue in the process visit Redeemer and Shelby. This has required a lot of prayer, coordination of schedules, and teamwork.
Confidentiality continues to be critical at this point. We appreciate your continued support, prayers, and patience. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank our families for their understanding of the time that has been required away from them. We could not devote ourselves as needed to this processs without that support.
Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
